The course coordinators infrastructure is a life saver in large courses. In any large class that I’ve taught, I find myself spending hours on SCPD delivering exams, exceptions for exam times, handling TA absences, etc. For none of these tasks did I have a comparative advantage….Swati has shown me that the coordination does not require faculty—and it can free up hours to be better spent in the course. The lack of logistic issues frees faculty to rewrite lectures, brainstorm new assignments, etc,… it also helps TAs better support students. There are effectively zero fires. I think a large fraction of faculty can sympathize with a last minute fire that destroys your week … that is just gone in this model.
I've worked with a course coordinator for both CS330 and CS221, and they were super helpful in many aspects of the course organization, were also responsive to our needs, and allowed us to spend more time on preparing lectures and course content. Their help ranged from organizing poster session logistics to helping handle individual student circumstances to helping make decisions consistent with other CS courses. As just one example, we had an exam scheduled during the week of the Black Lives Matter protests, and the course coordinator helped us with making the decision to offer more flexibility in grading, in determining the messaging to send to students, and generally being informed about the decisions made by other instructors when in tricky situations
